March 6, 1932 ~ July 3, 2021 (age 89)

Obituary

Joan Dermatis, 89, of Plattsburgh, NY, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Joan was born on March 6, 1932, in Irvington, NJ, to the late Robert and Elsie (Von Zschinsky) Loewen.
Joan graduated from Clifford J Scott High School in East Orange, NJ, at the age of 16 and Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Letters degree in Journalism in 1952. She met her future husband of 57 years, Walter, in Keene, NY, where she had a summer job during college.
They married in 1952, and together traveled the world with the US Army, living in AL, SC, France, TX, KS, VA, NJ (while Walter was in Vietnam), and PA. Joan always made a warm and welcoming home for family and friends. After a short stint in Iran, they settled in Plattsburgh, NY, overlooking Lake Champlain and built a cabin in Keene, their beloved North Country.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by two of her daughters: Donna (Michael) Jaye of Carlisle, PA, and Dayle (Ken Meese) Dermatis of West Linn, OR; her five grandchildren: Megan Jaye Tooman, Baylee Bruno, Matthew Jaye, David Jaye, and Emily Jaye Perales; six great-grandchildren; a niece, Pamela Bickle; and a nephew, Richard Clark.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, and her eldest daughter Debi Bruno.
She will be remembered as a selfless and caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, as well as a good listener and someone who was always there for you. She was ordained as a reverend online to officiate the wedding of one of her grandchildren. She was an avid reader of news, current events, and romance and mystery novels, a lover of yard sales and crossword puzzles, among the many passions she passed along to her loved ones. Her articles appeared in numerous magazines, and she also saw a novel published, coauthored with a friend.

Joan will be laid to rest on July 11 at North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid, NY, following a graveside service that will begin at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate.html).
