Priscilla Victoria Houser Engle, 80, of Amberson PA, passed away on December 17, 2025. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother and was born on August 2, 1945, in Sanford, Florida, to the late Robert C. Houser and Joanne Weest Houser.
Priscilla was a proud graduate and Bubbler of Boiling Springs High School, Class of 1963, where she was a member of the cheerleading squad, student council, choir, school newspaper staff, and Future Teachers of America. She went on to attend Shippensburg State College, where she earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Education, dedicating her career to teaching and lifelong learning.
She spent her career as an educator with the Carlisle Area School District, teaching at Crestview, Mount Holly Springs, and North Dickinson Elementary Schools. Priscilla’s passion for teaching and nurturing young minds left a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.
Priscilla was actively involved in her community, serving as a Dickinson Township Supervisor, a member of the Chambersburg Quilters Guild, and as a member of the Dry Run American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Priscilla is survived by her loving husband, William J. Engle; her daughters, Elaine Maloy (Ted) of Hershey, and Ellen Cherricks (JJ) of Newville; her cherished granddaughters, Taryn Maloy, Courtney Cherricks, Cassandra Cherricks, and Vivien Cherricks; sisters Diane (Gary) Henderson, Deborah (Peter) Kroehler, brother, Robert (Jenny) Houser, and several nieces and nephews. To her granddaughters, she was known as “Nanu”, a role that she treasured deeply.
Nanu had a passion for making things from scratch and sharing her beloved recipes, always bringing family together for feasts around the table. She was especially known for making pierogies, strawberry jam, sauerkraut, and dill pickles—dishes that we passed down from previous generations that became her own tradition . She loved quilting and dreamed of making a quilt for each of her granddaughters. Nanu never missed her granddaughters’ activities or sporting events, cheering proudly from the audience and sideline with pride. A collector is another title she held, and she took great pride in finding deals at auctions, thrift shops, and yard sales. Christmas was a passion of Priscilla’s—she loved decorating her home in Woolrich red plaid as well as many themed Christmas trees for the holidays.
Priscilla found joy in beach combing, especially in the Florida Keys and Chincoteague Island, Virginia, where she taught her family how to clam on the sandbars. Nanu was the self proclaimed world’s best clammer and crab picker. She loved collecting sea glass, conch shells, and smooth stones, each holding a memory of time spent near the water.
Gardening and growing herbs was another of Priscilla’s great loves, but the place her heart most called home was the log home she shared with Bill at Glory View Farm. There, they spent countless peaceful hours on the porch watching hummingbirds, deer, and other wildlife wander through the valley.
Priscilla and Bill’s love for each other and their family has stood strong for 58 years. Words cannot express how deeply her passing has touched our family. We thank her for being a strong presence in our lives and for her unceasing love. We have so many memories that we will always keep close to our hearts.
A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions to the Shippensburg University Foundation in memory of Priscilla Engle can be made online at www.SUFoundation.org/Give-Now or mailed to Shippensburg University Foundation, 500 Newburg Road, Shippensburg , PA 17257.
