A Sorrowful Family Honors Pauline Marhevka
In celebration of a life dedicated to her family, and with profound remorse, we proclaim the passing of our beloved matriarch, Pauline Therese Marhevka.
Pauline was a twentieth century woman. She was born Pauline Malinskas in the coal mining region of Scranton, PA, where her character was forged through the hardships of the Great Depression and a deep Faith cultivated in the Catholic Church and parochial schools. She was then well prepared to team with husband, Michael A. Marhevka, to raise her family to be strong, industrious and moral. Leadership through example and discipline was her template. She offered her time and talents many times over to community organizations including the Carlisle Civic Club and the Carlisle Garden Club, as well as multiple church-related functions such as the Saint Patrick’s Church Council and numerous craft and fundraising endeavors.
Three children: Mick, Paul, and Therese, were raised and guided through the turbulent sixties and seventies. To this day, the imprint of Pauline’s moral and religious foundations are reflected in the paths of their lives. The spouses of these children, Jennifer Marhevka (Mick), Merlene Marhevka (Paul), and Michael Sheely (Therese) also reflect on the love and support that Pauline showered on them within the family.
Three grandchildren, Nicole, Katie, and Allison, continue in the Marhevka mold, working hard and enjoying the benefits of our American culture. One great grandson, Elliot, was born too late to fully appreciate his Great Grandmother and he so will know her only through our stories.
The entrepreneurial success of the family business, Holly Woodcrafters, was the keystone of Mike’s and Pauline’s marriage. Although Mike’s untiring work in developing a prosperous business from scratch was observed by all employees and customers; Pauline’s behind-the-scenes supportive roles were no less important to the company’s achievements.
In her quiet moments Pauline demonstrated an artistic talent which could not be contained. Her quilting abilities are exhibited in over twenty finely stitched and treasured heirlooms. To say she dabbled in oil painting and needlework would be to minimize her productive talent. Without a doubt, though, her family will miss the holiday and regular Sunday dinners where Pauline’s skill in the kitchen would shine. A Rockwell painting could not capture the prominence of Sunday dinner around the Marhevka dining room table where the rest of the world would disappear, and FAMILY was all that mattered. Exquisite.
We already miss you dearly, Pauline. May the Peace of Christ be with you.
