Carlisle

Jack R. “Pop” Worley, 82, of Carlisle, PA, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at his residence. He was born April 23, 1942, in Gretna, Pittsylvania County, Virginia to the late Dock C. and Nettie (Shelton) Worley.

Jack “Pop” was born into a family of farmers, working most of his youth on the family tobacco farm. He was drafted into the military, serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Most of his life he would recount the days of being stationed in the Ia Drang Valley, Vietnam and worrying about what happened to his Army brothers. After his separation, Pop returned to the small town of Gretna, Virginia, where he worked at Klopman Mills. He later began his Trucking career with McLean Trucking, which brought him to Lebanon, PA. McLean eventually closed, leaving Pop with the decision to continue his trucking career with ABF Freight, Carlisle, PA. He worked in the trucking industry as a driver for much of his work life, with over 30 years of service, adopting the handle, “Diamond Jack”. Health issues lead him to his early retirement, leaving him with countless memories he would share throughout his life. Trucking was very much a part of his DNA, he would sit at the window and stare at Interstate 81 almost every day. Pop loved family time, especially on holidays, when he would always suggest playing the card game, Rook. In his spare time, he would enjoy being outdoors, especially working in the garden. Pop would always have a project for you when you arrived to visit, most of the time outdoors and in the middle of the “summer heat.” He was a life member of the Carlisle VFW, Post 2099 and the White Circle, Carlisle. Pop would often visit the clubs to indulge in a bit of gambling or card games on the weekends. He loved to gamble, often stopping at a truck stop, local gas station or casino. Pop made the ultimate sacrifice, serving his country and working endless hours to support his family, he was the ultimate family man.

Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, Wanda (Lewis) Worley of Carlisle; children, Mark Worley, Dave Worley and Jacqueline “Jackie” Worley, all of Carlisle; grandchildren, Jared Worley of Michigan, Blake (Emily) Worley of Mechanicsburg, and Dillon Worley of Carlisle; great-grandson, Jackson Robert Worley; and sister, Nancy Bryant of Gretna, VA. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his siblings, Ruby Gunn, Myrtle Davis, Elnora Pickeral, Evelyn “Toot” Doss, Calvin “Bill” Worley, Virginia Mae Doss, Joyce Blevins, and Bobby Lee Worley.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in the Gretna Cemetery, Gretna, VA. Arrangements are being handled by the Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Mt. Holly Springs, PA 17065.
