She graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1944, and worked as a secretary/clerk in center-city Philadelphia, commuting each day on the train. Betty married her high school sweet-heart, Charles Carbaugh Shannon, Jr., in 1947, after his military service in World War II.

In 2001, they moved to Chambersburg, PA and lived in the home of Ken and Laurie Shannon. They were a joy to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
