Donald Gene Hummel, Sr.

Donald Gene Hummel, Sr., 84, of Carlisle, PA, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, in the UPMC Carlisle Hospital. He was born December 21, 1941, in Marysville, Perry County, to the late Levi and Violet (Kitner) Hummel.

Donald worked for over 38 years at Carlisle Tire and Wheel. In his last 15 years, he was tasked with monitoring the boiler system. He was a hard worker at his job and at home. He had no idea what “take it easy” meant, and on any day of the week you may have seen him up on the roof of the house, cutting branches with his chainsaw, or shoveling snow.

Donald enjoyed reminiscing about the past, sharing memories filled with humor, warmth, and a touch of gentle mischief that never failed to entertain those around him. Donald could speak on any subject from politics, religion, the stock market, or how to fix your car. He could solve all the world’s problems in less than an hour.

His greatest joy in life was his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Margaret “Peggy” (Woods) Hummel of Carlisle; children, Donald Gene Hummel Jr., Keith Allen Hummel (Terry), Wendy Sue Freet (companion, Frank Wolfe), Richard Eugene Hummel (Mandy), and Chad Michael Hummel; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and siblings, Winifred Webber, Beverly Russel, Joan Stouffer, and Kenneth Hummel. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his brother, Barry Hummel.

Visitation begins at 10:00 AM with the Memorial Service being held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 17, 2026, at the Newville Church of The Brethren, 16 Carlisle Road, Newville, PA 17241 with Pastor John Hess officiating. A graveside burial with the immediate family will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Neighbors in Christ, P.O. Box 71, Newville, PA 17241.
