Barry Smith

Barry O. Smith, EdD, 77, formerly of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 in Green Ridge Village, Newville, PA. He was born February 6, 1942 to the late Barton O. and Geraldine (Reichenbach) Smith.

A devout Lutheran, Barry last attended the Big Spring United Lutheran Church, Newville. Dedicating his life‘s work to the field of education, he earned his BSEd from Bloomsburg State College in 1964, a MSEd from Bucknell University in 1969 and an EdD from Temple University in 1979. Barry taught in the Pottstown SD from 1964-1966, then moved to the Norwick SD from 1966-1977 where he taught math and physics and held the positions of middle school principal and assistant to the superintendent. In 1977, Barry moved to the Midd-West School District as assistant superintendent and superintendent. He finished his career as an associate professor at Shippensburg Universityfrom 1989 to 2000 and worked as a hearing officer for special education from 1991-2008.

Surviving are his children, Jeffrey Smith of Sunbury, PA and Cindy Smith-Parr (Andy) of Blacksburg, VA; grandson, Jacob; brother, Terry Smith of Harrisburg, PA and companion, Sandy Cones of Newville.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at 11:00 AM in Green Ridge Village, 210 Big Spring Rd., Newville, PA 17241 with Rev. Barbara D. Albert officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant House, Att: Sandra Latchman, 5 Penn Plaza, New York, New York 10001-1810.
