Richard Bates

April 16, 1939 — August 25, 2016

Richard E. Bates, 77, of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away on August 25, 2016. He was born on April 16, 1939 at Seidle Hospital in Mechanicsburg, PA to the late Jacob and Dorothy Kipp Bates.

Dick graduated from Mechanicsburg High School Class of 1957.  A US Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Ranger during the Vietnam War. Dick retired from the Mechanicsburg Post Office in 1992. Memberships included:  life member of the Mechanicsburg Club, life member of the Carlisle VFW Post #477 and long time member of the American Legion Post #109.  Friendly to all, he was also a loving father and husband.

Dick is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janice D. Bates; a daughter, Debra S. Bates-Schrott, husband Eric and their children, Connor and Tyler, all of Ellicott City, MD; and a son, David W. Bates of Mechanicsburg. Also surviving is his brother, Samuel S. Bates of Dillsburg.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, in the Mechanicsburg Club Social Room, 333 Heinz St. Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Please bring stories and remembrances for the celebration.
