Helen Cassel

After 92 years of a productive life, Helen Elizabeth Cassel, formerly from West Fairview and Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away into eternity on Sunday, October 23, 2016 in the Cumberland Crossings, Carlisle, PA with her children at her bedside. Helen was the daughter of William and Beulah Rath of Hummelstown, PA, where she was raised. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Vernon Cassel Jr. who she greatly missed; one brother; and two sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Catherine Slyder of  Mt. Holly Springs and her husband James; grandchildren, Rebecca and Adam; and a great grandson, Jase. Also, she is survived by her son, Stephen Cassel and his wife Roxane of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Renee Collins and her husband Kevin and Russell Wynegar and his wife Victoria; and  great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Parker and Easton. Helen also had many loving nieces, nephews and close neighbors who cared about her greatly.

Helen was a graduate of Hummelstown High School and the Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing; she earned a Master's Degree from Shippensburg State College. Helen was retired from East Pennsboro School District where she worked as a school nurse and elementary guidance counselor.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 10:30 AM in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, 6701 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112 with Rev. Judy Strayer officiating.  A celebration of life gathering will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Speranza Animal Rescue, 1216 Brandt Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Helen was our next door neighbor from the time we moved into the neighborhood.  She was a good neighbor and friend.   We already miss her terribly.
