George D. Witmer, 68, of Carlisle passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012 I n the Carlisle Regional Medical Center. George was born March 25, 1944 in West York, to the late George D. & Bernice A. Witmer.  He was a 1962 graduate of Milton High School where he played football and wrestled. After high school, he attended Point Park Junior College in Pittsburgh.
He worked for 42 years at United Telephone and later Sprint, before retiring in 2003. George served in the United States Air Force, and served a tour of duty at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, Vietnam.
George was an avid watcher and player of golf and a fan of college basketball and football. He loved music, especially 1950s and ‘60s rock-and-roll, blues and southern shag. George was known for his sense of humor and always enjoyed telling a good joke. He loved spending time with his family and friends, particularly during annual vacations to Myrtle Beach, SC.
He was a member of the Tan Son Nhut Association; the American Legion of Montandon, PA; VFW Post 477; Carlisle Eagles Arie # 1299; and BPOE 578 where he was a life member and past Exalted Ruler.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Essie Scott Witmer; his son, Scott, wife Stephanie and grandson Benjamin Witmer, all of Carlisle; a brother, Michael L. and wife Sharon Witmer of Sunbury; and two nephews, Matthew  and wife Tracy Witmer of Paxinos and Joshua Witmer of Malden, MA.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 27 at 11:00 AM in the Hollinger Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 501 N. Baltimore Ave., Mt. Holly Springs with the Rev. Richard Reese officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Holly Springs Cemetery.  There will be a viewing Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM with an Elks service at 8 PM in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association for Research, 1701 N. Beauregard St, Alexandria, VA  22311 or the National Kidney Foundation for Research, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.
